Chris, your wealth of information never fails to amaze me!

I've also heard it in simplified terms that the flute, clarinet and sax mechanism is based on a whole tone between the two hands (i.e. add the first finger and you get from G to F), whereas bassoon and oboe have a semitone between the two hands, hence the issues with the fingering that achieves a whole tone.

Is it worth noting that the F forked fingering is standard on a recorder even though F# is not played with the first finger (as an oboe) but with the 2nd and 3rd fingers - being a baroque based instrument, there must have been some similarities on these basic, essentially keyless instruments.

As a side note, I must say that I am one to avoid forked F at almost all costs!
