Re: Origin of Forked F fingering

Closed forked F vents are fitted to the majority of conservatoire system oboes (they stand closed except when RH3 is lowered while RH2 remains open, then closed again when both RH2 and 3 are both closed together) but they can be designed to work far more simply and effectively, still using existing parts but arranged in a different way (and omitting one part altogether).

An open standing F vent (as seen on thumbplate systems) causes problems with the conservatoire system Bb (xxo|xoo) which is why they're usually closed. B&H Imperial and Emperor conservatoire system oboes have open standing F vents and the Bbs aren't particularly great on them. Some players or teachers of dual system oboes have the rocker taken off so the F vent is open standing - not sure why they do this a it's designed to be closed for a reason.

It will mean a fair amount of surgery on an existing instrument to convert it to this new design, but shouldn't be much of a problem on an instrument in the setting out of pillars and toneholes and then the keywork mounting stages.

That's all I'm willing to give away at this pre-embryonic stage.
