Re: Does doubling hurt oboe embouchure?

I would ask the teacher if there is a concern regarding your daughter's oboe playing that the teacher believes is related to her sax playing. There may be some aspect of your daughter's oboe playing which a) needs improvement and b) the teacher feels may be complicated by her sax playing.

My first teacher, when I was a new oboe learner, thought it would be a good idea if I would stop the clarinet while I was trying to learn oboe, because of my reflexive tendency to treat the reed like a mouthpiece and put too much pressure on it (a.k.a. "biting"). She felt that my concentrating wholly on the oboe for a period of time would get me out of the clarinet habits. It took me a long time to get it right.

But since then, I have learned alto sax and of course English horn, and I can still play the clarinet and a little flute (took lessons on that years ago, too). I can't say that I "damage" my oboe embouchure by switching off among these instruments, although sometimes if I have been playing long and hard on one of them, and then have a quick switch to oboe, there is a clear sense of having to adjust for a little while.

Susan
