I think you make a good point here, and it's what my daughter says. When she practices one instrument, it improves her other ones. Think of a professsional or collegiate-level athlete. They don't only lift weights to strengthen the muscles that are directly used; they also work on the other muscles to improve fitness and control. Why would mouth muscles be any different?

My daughter had her audition this morning for a fellowship with a large symphony. When asked about her other instruments, she told them she was just playing around with them but wanted to become an orchestral oboe player. So, that was partly true. She does want to play oboe in an orchestra. But she also accepted a job this summer in a musical playing oboe and clarinet.

I'd be interested to hear about any well-known oboe players who also play other instruments well.
