Hi Dutchy!
I read through this whole thread before replying, because I wanted to see what everyone else had to say.
Craig told me the same thing he told you, and I am bit ashamed to admit that I still haven't done it systematically, but I do manage to adjust my own oboe reasonably well. What can I say? It plays. And it is very helpful to be able to troubleshoot your own instrument.
But I completely agree with johnt about the three sources he cites: the book by Bruce McCall is the clearest, easiest, and least frustrating of all the adjustment guides I have used. If I had to choose one, that's the one I would choose.
I used to use the red-paged Sawicki (and I do believe I saw it for sale very recently at Charles Double Reed). It is reliable, but you have to keep referring back to the schematic drawing constantly, and the dark red pages with black ink are not fun for old eyes in anything but a perfect light. The McCall book is crisp black on white, and has a schematic on every page, which is very, very helpful.
The McFarland book is a lot like the Sawicki, and is also reliable, but again, not nearly as user-friendly as the McCall.
One good thing about both Sawicki and McFarland is that they include English Horn adjustments. The McCall is oboe only.
There is also a reliable online oboe adjustment guide by Brian Seaton. http://www.oboehouse.com/resources-adjustment-guide.html It's on a par with the published material other than McCall.
They ALL use different numbering systems for the screws. I don't think there is a standard system, because not all oboes have the same number of screws in the same places.
Bottom line: McCall.
