Robert,
Good points for me...
I think the McFarland thing is about drag testing using paper where the entire pad is tested at once, so a smaller pad would test with a lighter drag than a larger pad if equivalent downward pad pressures were happening between primary and secondary pads, like the example of smaller brake pad Vs. larger brake pads.
It has struck me as a way of indicating equivalent downward pressure which would indicate the equal pressure you describe as the desirable goal. But equal downward (closing) pressure <> equal drag using this technique where primary and secondary pad sizes differ.
So, I did not mean to have the smaller pad 'under-adjusted' but suggest that equal pressure of drag testing using the whole-pad drag test method would really be an indication of an over-adjustment on the small pad.
The non-drag tested (play tested) keys where the goal is minimal closure without fuzziness in the tone (f#-g#), forked-f resonance key and c#-d# keys add an interesting dimension to the problem in some ways because pressure-wise, one key in those combinations is definitely under-adjusted compared to the other, or at least not closing with equal pressures. And for those, its not a big-key - little-key difference.
