Re: Need to adjust oboe, I have Sawicki, do I need anyone else?

Just wanted to report that on the strength of the recommendations on this thread I bought the McCall guide, even though I have the Sawicki, McFarland, and Seaton guides already. And I'm glad I did. What I like, some of it already mentioned: 1. Numbered screw diagram on every page next to instructions so you don't have to flip back and forth, which is highly inconvenient. 2. Play test corresponding to each adjustment (proof in the pudding) 3. very clear point of view on how hard to press the keys and relative drag under each pad.

You can pick up valuable advice from any of these guides that you won't get from the others. As mentioned, some have EHorn and some don't; some go deeper on subtle points than others. Some cover more adjustments..for example, the McCall is limited to just the primary ones, and it tells you that you need to make sure there's play in the bridges between joints, but doesn't tell you how to adjust them, which seems like a strange and unnecessary omission! The Sawicki takes the point of view that the goal is equal drag on the primary and secondary keys (perfect balance), which appears to be a minority point of view. The Seaton guide is great, especially for the price, but I found its somewhat unorthodox convention for naming the keys to be annoying and confusing. The McFarland has a good page on troubleshooting specific notes.

I like the fact that McCall takes a strong point of view, but admits that there is room for disagreement on subtle points even among the experts. It's worth reading all of these guides...having a well-adjusted oboe is a bit like having a great reed...aaah!
