youngoboist, have you heard the phrase, "herding cats"?
Sometimes someone will say a certain task is, "Like herding cats." That means it is an impossible task, because as we all know, cats are independent and won't follow a leader -- it's just the nature of the animal!
I have been a music director (worked for many years in this profession), and I can tell you that leading a youth musical group is a lot like "herding cats." Your conductor may be accustomed to dealing with young orchestras, and may be more tolerant of the distractions than many of us can be. He/she probably has to decide which fights to fight, and which to just let go.
If the conductor knows that they are basically "herding cats," they may just decide to let that fact be as it is, and hope for the best from the music, however frustrating it may be for you and others like you.
Best wishes for your audition into the advanced group!
Susan
