There do seem to be some conductors that are just naturally gifted with the ability to command order and respect from the groups they lead.

I am reminded of the director I observed while I was working as a classroom aide in a middle school music program (yes, they did call me the "band aide").
She had the group completely under control, and they achieved significantly as a result. These were just "normal" middle class white suburban American kids. I have no idea how she achieved and sustained their respect, but she did. She just didn't let them get away with anything, and she told corny jokes. And she was a good director. Maybe that was all it took.

I also saw this same group absolutely TAKE APART a substitute teacher one day when the director was absent, so it wasn't that they were especially well-behaved children at root. I also had a couple of these same kids in one of my church groups, and I thus KNOW that she had at least one behaviorally problematic youngster in the band! She just communicated something to them that they "got" immediately. They behaved very well for her, loved her to pieces, and made nice music together.
