Just to stop this thread from sliding into oblivion -- because I too think is an interesting question.

Now, at the extreme risk of turning the thread into yet another long-scrape / short-scrape discussion(!), is there any credibility to the suggestion that the "rules" might be slightly different between the two types?

I am definitely getting the admonition from the long-scrape world that moving to the tip is the thing to do. But then I watch the Diana Doherty videos that we have been so lucky to discover lately, and to my eye she is using quite a bit of the reed. Watching other short-scrapers can give different impressions however -- so does this mean that more variation has been found to be acceptable there?

My previous teacher, a fine long-scrape player and a veritable walking encyclopedia of the oboe, often brought up the "less reed in the mouth" issue, and also at times commented that he felt some of the players on the other side of the pond were using too much reed for his liking.

If any short-scrape experts can chime in here I think the comparison could be fascinating.
