Here's a quick trick to find the right amount of reed to use.

First play the interval B to C in the staff using really too much reed. The interval will be too wide. (As Dutchy said: first year honking.)

Now use progressively less and less reed. At some point the B/C interval will be in tune.

That's the most reed you can ever use and still play in tune.

Using even less reed will give you a more 'covered' sound with less high partials as you smother the tip.

At some point the reed won't vibrate. That's the least reed you can use (just before the reed stops). That's where I find I have the sound I like best and the most control.

It's a pretty narrow window, but if you work at it, it won't be long before you can find it by feel.
