I am afraid you generalized too much on my remark "after a while the oboe will no longer sound like an oboe". I had in mind the time I heard a professional orchestra play and all the way through the concert I kept hearing the unique cutting tone of the performer. He had a nice tone and technique but it didn't blend which is also needed for an oboe to be an oboe. I believe you also generalize too much on all reeds not made personally are "junk". Some are ok; the problem is finding out which ones before your wallet collapses. I believe a problem exists where players try to find their best style and tone and forget that playing any instriment is a long journey. Try different styles and reed types . The problem with finding the right reed and style is like a trumpet player always searching for the best mouthpiece; an impossible task. Sooner and later you have to stop searching and concentrate on the tools you are using on a composition; an imperfect reed and possibly an imperfect oboe.
As my old instructor Marcel J. Dandois would say "How do you know you wouldn't have gotten a job when you said "For instance, if I played like a German oboist and went to go get a job playing for the Cleveland Orchestra, I wouldn't stand a chance. "
If you didn't get a job at least they would have told you why not---possibly your style of playing could be one reason; but you will never know.
