 Re: Tuning on the Oboe

I looked through the latest Woodwind Brasswind Catalog and in the descriptions of reeds made by Chartier,Fox,Gower,Martin Lesher,Meason,Rico,Selmer, and maybe some other makes---no where does it say French cut,German cut or American. The only time the word "American" is used is in "American Composite Synthetic".
Each player is a unique person with their own sound (i.e. nasal cavities etc are all unique). One player has worked up the sound they go with and developed their own reed scraping technique. No one sound is the best. To be historically accurate you should not have an "American" sound when playing Mozart, or a French or German Composition. The oboe if well played has a cutting sound through an orchestra no matter what "cut" of reed is used. I do not recall saying "the oboe no longer sounds like an oboe at some point"?? At some point when working up a reed you may go too far and degrade the reed and lose its playing potential.

I really think players can use modelling someone elses sound, but no two players are alike in sound . If you like a certain sound go for it; and do all the other things required such as blending with other instruments, dynamics and cutting through a playing group when required. It is ok to say you like one players sound, but you cannot ever equal it.
