Second what he said about getting a soft enough reed. I struggled for a long time with too-hard reeds because I naively thought that since I was an adult and not a child, that "medium" reeds ought to be for me. And I had a terrible time making any progress. Once I switched to medium-soft and soft reeds, I got on much better.
