Joepie hello,

Firstly, buying advice. Best written, most comprehensive guide is here:
http://www.public.asu.edu/~schuring/Oboe/instruments.html

Secondly; I advise getting the standard keywork for your area. If standard keywork in Holland (am I right?) is the German fully-automatic octave system, that is the one to go for. In USA preferred system is semi-automatic octaves, in UK they use a thumbplate instead of RH index finger for the A-Bb, B-C transition, Italy use LH thumb for bottom Bb, etc. etc. You should try and buy whatever is the most accepted standard for your country/area. Improves resale opportunities and keeps your teachers happy.

Thirdly, not all instruments are created equal. Two consecutively numbered Lorees, Marigauxs, Coveys etc. will NOT feel the same, sound the same - or even be worth the same in resale value, if one has been poorly maintained or has developed a fault. This is why you need both to buy from a reputable source and to involve your teacher.
If your teacher is not being supportive, perhaps you should try and find out why? Maybe he/she doubts that you will continue, or suspects you cannot afford a pro instrument? If he/she doesn't believe in you, perhaps you should consider upgrading your teacher first :)

Good luck, Joepie. Take your time, and make a good choice. Don't be railroaded into buying from one particular shop, or one particular model. figure out how much you can afford first, and don't look at instruments that exceed your budget. Get expert advice and use this board to get dissenting opinions which you can listen to, or ignore. And remember that you can always change your instrument at a future date - nothing is hewn in stone.

J.
