Joepie,
The only reason to not buy a pro oboe is insufficient funds, period. Much of the advice to the contrary appears to me to be motivated by either snobbish elitism or jealousy, as if a novice is not "deserving" of a pro oboe. In some cases, I would suspect that the person giving the advice may fear that a student will end up with a better instrument than they have! Or maybe it's just the feeling someone gets when the neighbor buys his kid a mercedes. Is that really their business? Anyway, you're an adult, if you want a mercedes, get one!
Get the best oboe you can comfortably afford. Oboes are not a bad investment either. It would be interesting to compare the loss in value over a 4 year period, say, of a pro oboe and a student oboe. If you end up deciding to stop playing, most of your money will still be there either way.
In terms of choosing a pro oboe, find a teacher you can trust to help you evaluate your purchase, but don't be afraid to pull the trigger. As I said, if in a couple of years you find a better oboe, your loss on the first one probably won't be that great. I'll tell you one thing, oboes were a helluva better investment than stocks in the past couple of years.
