Re: reed closing up - time for a new reed?

Dutchy,

I could never get the *&@#$^ wire to work. In every case the reeds I tried it on leaked afterwards. Tom Stacy even told me the same thing; that he doesn't bother with it for that very reason. If you tie your reeds on straight north, south, east & west with sufficient tension on the thread & if the cane is is perfectly shaped, then wire is superfluous; a closed reed is a worthless reed, IMHO. If it continues to close on you, then that means that the chemicals in the saliva have worn down the cellulose in the reed to effectively cancel out any springy-ness that the reed might have had while it was relatively fresh. I rinse my reeds out after every practice session & so I generally get three or four days worth out of a good one. But on the fifth day, it's pushing it.

Happy New Year!!!

Best,

john
