S40 and S45s don't have the split D#-E trill mechanism - this is only found on the S55, S65, S5 and S6 oboes.
The main differences between an S20 and an S10 are semi-auto 8ves, RH C-D trill, LH B-C# trill and the low Bb bell vent. The S40 is dual system with nearly all the keywork as an S5 but without the D#-E trill, and may not have a 3rd 8ve (which isn't really important, though they can be fitted at any time). You can take an S10 up to Grade 8, though I think that's pushing it just beyond its limits.
Apart from the extra keywork found on pro models, they also have a different bore and more likely to have undercut toneholes as well as having tuning work done to them which you wouldn't find on student oboes. With pro oboes you have more alternative fingerings at your disposal, so there are more ways of getting out of trouble if you happen to have played the 'wrong F' at any given moment.
Thing is, if you do get a fully loaded oboe, this will last you for years as you will have everything you need on the one instrument. Keep an eye out on all the second hand lists and classifieds, as well as the famous auction site whose name is well known but never ever mentioned.
