I got the S10 second hand as well, and at the time H quoted me a rough price for buying it back from me in part exchange - so the upgrade has been on the cards from day one. I guess the thing is, much as I'd love an S5, can I justify it over an S40 or an S20? Also, are there even second hand 40s and 20s about? I don't seem to see as many of them as I do S5s.
How far so you think the S10 is able to go? Should I be expecting to get through grade 8 on it, or would it be an unnecessary struggle? I see a lot of posts from people wanting to upgrade long before grade 7, but I still feel that at the moment I am the limiting factor and not the instrument, with the exception of a couple of odd trills. When I upgraded my clarinet it was because I felt I could player faster than my keywork. When I got a better one it made a big difference to keys and tone.
From what you say it sounds like very few mods are actually worth it. I might as well try and find all the keys there at the start.
