I had a similar scenario using the 1st's tuner while playing my A (he couldn't get his reed working in time) - his tuner (a Yamaha) was saying E while I was clearly playing an A. Not only that, he said to me 'You're playing an E' several times at which point I gave him his tuner back and picked up my old Korg AT-1 and used that instead.
