Great advice, Chris, nothing drives me crazier than being drowned out by a second oboist playing a loud A over mine. When I play second, I sometimes play a middle D just to be sure, but many times I just sit it out, after all if your reed is not capable of playing in tune at 440, you've got bigger issues. Unlike other instruments, we should be able to play in tune based on our setup, there's really nothing we should be adjusting (in extremis, pulling the reed out, but I don't recommend it!!). I always have my tuner and I tune to that before the first oboist gives the A and then I get out of the way most of the time...
