Interesting thread!

I play a lot of second oboe with a variety of principal players and always tune to the principal with a very soft A, matching his or hers. I do not play any other notes, just the A and get out of the way. (I have already warmed up and tuned to 440 and am basically just checking.) But I am also lucky enough to play with great colleagues who actually tune to A 440 and mostly play in tune.

We had a brief time in our orchestra where we tuned to 441 but the winds spoke to our conductor and he restored the A to 440. It is now in our contract that the pitch is A=440 and we are much happier ;-)
