Dutchy, I don't think it's a slap in the face at all, but maybe it's just me. If the first oboe is tuning properly at 440 and you're sitting right next to them and can verify that, you can tune while everybody's warming up and should be fine. Here's a question. If you're flat or sharp, what are you going to do about it, switch reeds? If you lip up or down to compensate, then what's the point of tuning, you have to tune each note anyway as you're playing!
Another pet peeve for me is when the orchestra pile on to the A before it's had a chance to sound even a second! Sometimes it's not quite at 440 before the pileon commences. That's a drag too.
