Hi Chuck-
Here's my experience-
I have come back to playing after some 30 years away. When I was a high school student, my parents really stretched themselves to buy me a used Cabart, which was at the time still a well-known and respected brand. When I came back to it I found it rather dead and unresponsive, and decided that I was now serious enough to buy a good instrument. I went to my repairman who also has quite a few used instruments. He recommended I check out the Yamaha, and I'm really glad he did. I took home and tried several different used horns of the same model, and they were both very different. The one I decided on is so responsive and a joy to play. My only complaint is the fuzziness of that darned C-sharp- a common complaint. I can only cite my own experience as something for you to consider. At one time Yamaha was not a very good maker of oboes, but they've really changed that.
by the way, I live in Southeastern Pennsylvania, in a mostly un-airconditioned house and I think we have as hot and humid a climate as anywhere-and very dry winters. And my wooden Yamaha is from Cleveland. No cracking so far.
