Oboes and climate (time to buy a new one)
Author: Herakles82

Hello everyone,

I've been practicing/playing the oboe for over a year and a half now and my teacher suggests that I may be "outgrowing" my first instrument. There are so many styles/types, with phrases like "semi-automatic", "full conservatory", "modified conservatory", "resonite", "split ring" -- what on earth do these mean?!

An additional problem is that I live in Western Pennsylvania where the humidity during the summer months is intense and oppressive, and from what I understand can be fatal to wood oboes especially.

Since I plan on spending a somewhat considerable amount of money on a new or very good "used" instrument I thought I would consult the board on what everyone thought would make an appropriate choice.

I'm 49 and will be completing my second year of study this June.

If you feel that you need more details just let me know.

Thanks for all of your help.

Sincerely,

Chuck Cobern
