Mary Ann,
You are asking good questions. The important thing is to get the basic architecture of the reed established & then to do the necessary refinements. Toward achieving this end, I would recommend a couple of books to ensure a good foundation. My Kingdom For A Reed by Teresa De La Plaine is excellent as is Joe Shalita's ebook or the hard copy from David Crispin. MKFAR is available from Forrests Music in Berkeley. Then it's just a matter of making lots of reeds & keeping your knife sharp. My choice in knives is the Nielsen "wedge" from their website. The quality for the price (cost/benefit) is hard to beat.
