For me it seems when you get a nice tip with extremely thin edges that vibrates really well... the rest of the reed just literally falls into place. I've noticed that on some of my better reeds, when the tip vibrates well, even before most of the bark is taken off the cane, I do not have to work as hard to make a decent sounding reed. I mean, it's probably like "well, duh, good tip probably means good reed" (not ALWAYS true, leaks develop and cane loves to change shape, etc), but it holds true for me.
Anyone else notice this?
