I find that it is often easier to fine-tune the tip when it is almost completely dry. One can then dust layers off the tip with great accuracy. Trying to do the same when the tip is really wet can cause it to snag on the knife, and even pull off sections of the tip (especially at the corners).
Of course, this could also be due to a dull blade or bad knife technique :-(
That said, even if I do snag the corners the reed will often continue playing as before. As long as most of the tip is intact, the reed continues playing.
