Speaking to a German colleage a while back, it's more common for German beginners and students to rent the more expensive instruments (German spec oboes and German/Oehler system clarinets) for far longer than we do in the UK.
Probably due to the fact that German spec instruments are far more expensive than basic thumbplate or conservatoire oboes (and German/Oehler system clarinets are indeed far more expensive than plastic Boehm system clarinets by several times).
And the music programmes and music education in Germany are much better organised, funded and equipped than here in the UK where we seem to have to make do, and only those that can afford it are the ones that can do it.
Couldn't the German school over here get help from Germany?
