There's a possibility that I may be able to get some teaching this year at the German School in London - this is a school for German families who have to move to London with their jobs for a while, so that their kids can follow the German school curriculum.
It occurred to me yesterday that while most British players use the thumbplate system, this might not be a good idea for these German kids, because if they move back to Germany in a few years, their teachers there will presumably use conservatoire systems? Can anyone confirm that this is correct?
And if this is indeed the case, does anyone know how I could get beginner (and cheap!) conservatoire oboes in the UK? You can rent or buy Buffets and Howarth S10s quite easily, but I've only ever come across thumbplates of these. If you want a conservatoire you have to get a fairly expensive model - which some of these families might not be happy with for a 10 year old! I'm envisaging a situation where they have to go back to Germany just to buy an oboe....
