Hey Bobo
goodness knows how you find these videos! YouTube can be a complete marvel at times. The review you found is a nice critique and captures the essence of Diana very well. She absolutely is a marvel and a major talent, also. Sorry about the link failing to work - it's frustrating that there are no obvious sites to visit to hear her without first committing oneself to buying. That said, there are two other cds of hers which are worthy of gracing anyone's oboe cd collection. Blues for D.D is pretty amazing, and contains major twentieth century repertoire from Jolivet and Dorati, etc., and a compilation album entitled 'Sublime Music for the Oboe' has every wonderful oboe melody and more, which showcases her beautiful tone and artistry. It also has a major quote from the 'Lover's Concerto' mentioned earlier. I'm sure you'll become a fan when you hear any of these three cds.
Just as a sideline - today my chinese oboe student collapsed in her lesson! She seemed un-well from the start of the lesson and began to sway and then fall to the floor, banging her head quite badly on the piano. I managed to grab her arm and oboe, but couldn't prevent her from falling. I managed to revive her and got her sitting up. However, I noticed blood all over my right hand and presumed it was from the back of her head. It turned out to be mine, caused by the oboe keywork trapping my thumb somehow as I tried to stop her falling. Eventually, the ambulance men arrived to take her to hospital. It transpired that her blood-pressure was very low, but she was released after several hours. It was all quite traumatic and worrying. But she seems well now. As you may know my orchestra is on tour in China this coming week, so I have arranged to meet her parents in Beijing before they attend our opening concert there. Her mother is a doctor and has recently been occupied in helping the sick and injured in the earthquake disaster zone which recently took place in China.
It will be lovely to meet them and let them know how very talented an oboist their daughter is. James
