James,
I have Nick Daniel's Italian Concerto CD, which is a winner, and I share your appreciation of Mayer and Leleux. As I said, the Schilli Vivaldi is impressive - what I'm most struck by is exactly what you point out..it's a flawless, polished performance. But that's where I give Klein's CD the edge - it's not as polished, I grant it, but it's very very exciting and his baroque flourishes are second to none. I urge you to lay your hands on it! You can hear some cuts on Accuradio.com's oboe subchannel but it takes some patience to cycle through! Also, I agree the Krommer is nice second rate classical (the composers I mean!). You should listen to Klein's Strauss on the CSO Barenboim Strauss Concertos CD. Again, some point out that the tempos he chooses are not wholly orthodox (CJ!). but it's an amazing gorgeous performance. I like what I heard of the Nick Daniels version and probably will buy it. Also, get your hands on Izotov's Sound in Motion CD - it's exactly what you're looking for, amazing technique married to unbelievably refined phrasing and musicality. He's amazing. There are monster oboists on both sides of the pond!
