My gauntlet! I'll take this up and report. I won't gouge but I'll slice 2-2.5 mm of pith with a stanley-knife, leaving the bark intact.

I don't want to do more than this, since it could make the blades "stand apart" if done too deeply, due to the additional angle it gives to the cane blades. As long as most of the cane under the thread is regular thickness, this should not matter.
