I dont know if its the time you soak it, because i usually soak mine for about 2-3 minutes after shaping, so its already semi moist. If the blank is really dry, at max I let it soak for no more than 15 minutes because then it gets watter logged. If the reed cracks, most of the time it is actually alright in some cases, I mean not preferred but not the end of a reed. My teacher used to tell me to "scrape through the crack" which works. The cane has different layers and usually what cracks is the outer hard brittle part, not the inner part. I have had cane crack EVERYWHERE.... San Diego to Boston to Vegas in the summer, they just love cracking, even if i let it soak for a while, but I hate warping of the cane which is why I dont soak them for long periods of time.
