Just for info, David Weber, reed maker extraordinaire & purveyor of some of the finest cane out there (Grimaud), recommends this tie length for his 1B shaper tip. I've tried it & it works to perfection. I use Stevens #2 Pro Silver staples & a Pisoni wooden handled French style mandrel. It really depends on the cane shape & the staple. Soak gouged cane in hot tap water for 20 minutes. By the time you get the water container from the tap running hot to your reed table & cane in the water, the water will be warm, IOW the proper temperature for proper soaking. It's a good idea to take the pieces out of the water after 25-30 minutes & let them rest gouge side up while you are tying. Then pop each piece back in the water for several seconds just before you shape & tie it. BTW it is better to shape then immediately tie than to shape a bunch/let dry/resoak/tie.
Yes, this is an amazing forum.
Best,
john
