hi bobo
i love that solo from barber's 1st symphony - so bittersweet and unsettled, it really gets to the heart of what an oboe is. yes, we can do happy, radiant music and skip about with amazing virtuosity, but it's the melancholia and yearning which marks the oboe out in the wind section. it's that side of its nature which tugs at the audience's heartstrings. i keep hoping my orchestra will do a season of barber and charles ive's music. they're both great, important composers with something meaningful to say.
i think barber once said he saved up his best tunes for the oboe. it seems to be true if you think about the solos from the violin concerto, the canzonetta, summermusic, and, of course, the symphonies. james
