thanks for the information about ms. elaine douvas. it would be lovely to hear her playing some wonderful oboe solos in her job at the met. they are very lucky to have her. i came across a clip of her playing hindemith's oboe sonata, which i thought was just beautiful. we dont get many opportunities to hear many american style oboists here in scotland - mainly due to geography - but i did give a brief lesson at the rsamd. (royal scottish academy of music and drama) to a los angeles based oboe student over here on exchange. he made an attractive tone with good intonation, so i just worked on getting him to be more extrovert and to increase his dynamic range. i'm pretty sure he said he had studied with allan vogel, and had even attended a few classes with ms. douvas. when i was a student i had one of my lessons at the royal academy of music (ram), in london, attended by thomas stacey. he was very friendly and complimentary. he also gave a really motivating masterclass with lots of humour and encouragement to the ram. students - little did i know then that i, too, would end up becoming a cor anglaisist.
next year my orchestra will begin its season with our new principal conductor, donald runnicles, who for many years has been principal conductor with the san francisco opera. he will also start his other new job with the deutsche oper berlin. he's actually a scot, but has made his name in america. it should be an exciting time for us when he starts and i look forward to working with him.
just to finish - a wonderful chill out cd for me is albrecht mayer's 'lieder ohne worte' (songs without words). its arrangements of many of js bach's most beautiful melodies. listen, in particular, to track two for oboe d'amore taken from the chorale prelude in f minor 'ich ruf zu dir, herr jesu christ'. you'll be in seventh heaven. now back to those multi-phonics and reed-scraping. james
