Re: Chudnow staples and the normal Cork Staples diferences

My best reeds are made on Chudnow staples and Stevens staples. I never have found the Chudnow staples to produce a sharp reed -- in fact I use a 46mm length of chudnow staple to bring the pitch up. Since they have a large bore, I suspect that for oboists accustomed to making reeds on a flatter opening at the staoke top, the reeds they produce are actually flat; and consequently there is an automatic embouchure accomodation, tightening the embouchure around the reed, producing a variously sharp and bright sound. I have used them for many years, and find them very rich in sound, and only 'bright' when my reed-making or cane causes that attribute. I use the corked staples.
