I've used Chudnow staples off an on a lot, and have come to some conclusions of my own.
1. They do have a bigger bore, and bigger bore always means higher pitch, so yes, a "sharper" reed would make sense.
2. I've tried the CA and the Sierra, and I can notice a slight difference in the way the CA respond. They're just a bit smoother, and perhaps a bit more vibrant.
3. They are harder for me to consistently make "really good reeds" because they are a bit brighter in sound so they require a more "covered" reed scrape, but when I do get a really good reed on them, they usually blow away any other reed I have at the time in projection and fullness of sound.
4. Also when I get a really good reed on them, I can feel the more open bore (opposed to say a glotin) and the ability to "blow through" the reed more.
5. With the skinny corkless staples, I usually get better reeds with thinner shapes, while with the thick corkless staples, I get better reeds with my RDG 2 (a very wide shape)
I think my Opus 1 gouge which has a more "covered" sound works better in Chudnow staples than my Graf gouge which is a bit a more vibrant and brilliant sounding.
