Hello,
I have tried reeds on the Chudnow staples and I know people who play on them all the time-- The only sound I ever hear come out of a reed made on them is very bright, lacking depth, and not very responsive. I think cork is definitely the way to go- even some of the synthetic cork staples distort the tone in a way I don't like. The staples that I like, which I think good a really nice, deep, lively sound, are the 47 mm. French Pro staples from Jeanee.
As for length of reed, I'm not sure if you are talking about a finished reed, but I finish mine at 70-71 mm. This length plays right at 440 for me and has a nice sound... anything longer feels unstable and often rather tip-noisy.
hope that helps,
ashle
