Listening to myself on tape -- which is something I do regularly to keep myself honest -- I find that I am not satisfied with the quality of my legato playing.

For example, in a medley of Christmas carols my group is playing, the solo oboe must lead the melody of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" -- a series of quarter notes lying between first G and middle D. Not difficult notes, but I am hearing too much "note-note-note-note-note-note-note-note-note-note," instead of just the sweep of melody that I would like.

I'm keeping my breath steady and tonguing very lightly, trying to just "ooze" the melody out, but it still sounds too much like discreet notes rather than a melodic phrase.

Could my fingering have something to do with this? Any hints in general for taking one's legato to a higher level?

 Thanks!

 Susan
