d-oboe -- it is fascinating that you find that a longer reed provides exactly what a shorter reed provides for others. I usually use a reed 68mm in length, wrapped on a 46mm staple, and find that I lose stability when the reed is longer. Part of the difference may be that I play at altitude. The lesson is that different things work for different players on different instruments with different embouchures using different cane and staples and shape and gauge, etc.
