 Re: Reed making

I got a reed making kit from Forrests for Christmas last year because I wanted to attempt it. I've been playing oboe for 16 months. Put all the stigma behind you. You are your own person. Maybe you'll get it faster than most people. Have the passion to do it? You can do it. Don't fear it, that's 90% of the battle.

I am making my own reeds now, took me about six months of patience but it's not that bad. The more you do it, the better (and faster) you get. Pace yourself nice and slowly at first, don't expect it to happen overnight. Make one every weekend otherwise you will get annoyed with the time involved. Dedicate a good 3 hours a week at first.

Two books I learned from - Jay Light's Oboe Reed Book and Shalitas book, Making Oboe Reeds. My teacher has given me input too but the books help a lot, especially the Shalita book when it comes to "final adjustments"

I spent about $200 on tools, mostly on the sharpening tools which included a diamond stone and a ceramic stone. These tools will last a while so it's just an initial shock but imagine how much you save in reeds? I'm buying my folded and shaped cane from Forrests at $18 for 10 pieces. So, once you get good, you basically get ten reeds for the price of one. And the best part is, it's a reed for you and not for the masses! You'll find that the oboe gets TONS easier when you're able to control your reeds! It's a totally liberating experience, so go for it! Learn it!

Anyway, it's not that bad making reeds but it takes tremendous patience and a really sharp knife. If in doubt, sharpen it.

GOOD LUCK!

Jay (San Antonio, TX)
