Yup - it's the knife.
With a properly sharpened knife, the reed really just makes itself. Usually you know what you need to do, but if the knife isn't DOING it...the reed doesn't come together.
Another thing...sharpening takes TIME. Sometimes, it may take 1/2 hour of fiddling to get a proper edge going - fine. It's better than spending all kinds of time gouging/shaping/tying/soaking cane, and then destroying your work with a dull knife.
