<<When I start a new reed, I write the month and day on the cork >>
Speaking of writing things on the cork, I still buy my reeds, and it seems like I am always trying reeds from different makers, so nowadays I write something on the cork (with an ultra-fine Sharpie) to let me know from whom I got that particular reed. That way, if a reed turns out to be especially good (or especially problematic), I can figure out where it came from.
I didn't always do this, thinking that I would certainly remember. But more than once, I've found myself playing a reed that I had gotten months before and didn't like at the time, only to find out later that I've grown into it, or it has changed over time into something I like a lot -- and I have no idea whose reed it is.
I've got one like that now -- it has a distinctive red thread wrapping (a heavier gauge of thread than most), and is a very nice, balanced reed -- but I cannot for the life of me remember where I got it, and it's driving me crazy!
