Please tell Dutchy to buy some lanolin (the stuff
nursing mothers use) at the local drug store. Best
cork grease ever. Jonathan Dlouhy recommended this
years ago to me. I've never looked back. You only need
to use a smidgen & not very often either. Works great
on staple corks as well.

--Sounds like something to try... I use a dab of vaseline rather than cork grease, and like CJWright, never grease my staple corks.
I don't sand them but do 'chew' them a bit to moisten and compress the cork if its a tight fit in the oboe. Chewing is done very carefully so not to dent the staple.
The little moisture added during chewing does lubricate the cork a bit as well.
