 Re: Reed Crow Technique

Here comes the rant...

"why does this elusive "crow" even matter anymore?" -because a lot of problems can be sovled without getting that blasted oboe out and checking if you listen to the crow.

"Want more crescendo power?"-you'll never get it, no matter what you do if the reed is weak and thin, which can be heard in the way the crow behaves against the air stream.

"More center on the high notes?"- impossible to achieve if there is too much rattle and more than one pitch in the crow.

"Better response and control on that low C# dim?"- good luck with that one, especially if you have a crow that will not respond with little air and hold itself up to pitch during diminuendo.

All of those things can be masked by playing the oboe and using your embouchure to influence the reed, making it sound better than it actually wants to play.

"...peers freak out adjusting their reeds in orchestra, clipping them until they are 67mm long...all because of this "C crow" principle. "-maybe they don't know what to listen for...which leads me to this..."elusive "crow" -there is nothing elusive about it if you have been taught how to properly use it. It is another diagnostic tool in our tool-box. You wouldn't blindly gouge cane, or tie a reed without measuring it. Why is the process of sorting, gouging and measuring cane a science and the process of reed making some divine, artistic manifestation dependant on the benevolence of the celestial deities? The crow is another tool to help in making reeds and I'm glad that I have had teachers along the way that have taught me how to use that tool.
