 Reed Crow Technique

Some questions for the group regarding the all important (?) reed crow:

1. Does everybody go for a C? I was looking at my Gekeler Method I book from, oh, 35 or so years ago when I was first learning the reed craft, and my teacher had penciled in a high B on a makeshift staff with the word "crow" under it on the back cover...have things changed over time or is the C one of those Philly inventions that has come to dominate the american oboe world? Or was it always thus?

2. How many octaves do people go for? I can always get to high and middle without much trouble but the low C is elusive and comes rarely. Is it important?

3. How do you hold the reed in your mouth for the crow? Do you place your lips loosely on the thread and apply no pressure to the reed itself or do you lightly grip the unscraped base of the reed and exert light pressure to get the magic octaves to sound?

4. Do the Europeans and others out there that use short scrapes crow their reeds for a specific pitch?
