Hello everyone --
Just got my Covey back -- sent it in for some very needed tuning and repairs, plus a question about upper joint not being tight.
It's beautifully in tune now, and really "grabs" the center of the tone. The throat C, B, and Bb sound better than they have ever sounded -- just like the rest of the notes on the instrument, actually.
Now, however, I am having a problem with the octave vents watering up.
The instrument is absolutely wonderful when it is "cold," but after playing just a short while -- 16 bars, say -- everything starts to tighten up, I hear the water, and it gets balky. Swabbing helps temporarily, but not for long.
I'm wondering if it might be possible that, as the instrument warms up, the vents are leaking a little bit, creating the resistant blowing and allowing the water to find its way into them. Does this sound reasonable? Or, what?
And, as a side question, what do you think about sealing the vents (with parafin or beeswax or such) versus NOT sealing them? My teacher believes that sealing them is more trouble than it's worth, and can cause exactly the problem I am having. However, the person who did my adjusting believes strongly in sealing (with beeswax).
Since I wasn't having this problem before (when the vents weren't sealed), I'm suspicious that somehow the beeswax has melted and gotten itself where it shouldn't be, and is causing this problem.
