To all: thank you so much for all your thoughts and advice! This was my first post, ever, after reading this bulletin board for a couple of months and getting my bearings. I look forward to future conversations!
My teacher conducts a community band and after I had been playing about six months he encouraged me to join...which I have done. His attitude is great: "just play the notes you can play, don't play the notes you can't play, and you'll be making a contribution!" He then added, "just play quietly!"
